- "Florida man pumps 30 gallons into wrong whole at Orlando gas station prompting hazmat response." By Joe Mario Pedersen of the Orlando Sentinel
- https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-ne-florida-man-pumps-gas-into-wrong-hole-orlando-20200129-e2lruydwjvfyzpsjyatwlb2hne-story.html
- What happened in this article was a man went to fill his boat with gasoline and accidentally put the hose into a fishing rod holder. Before he could realize what was happening the gasoline had spilled on the boat and on the floor of the gas station. After that hazmat needed to be called and they came and cleared the spilled gasoline from the premises.
- The problem:The problem was the spilled gasoline could cause sickness or accidents within the gas station. The bigger problem was that with all the gasoline around any spark could have caused a massive fire and spread to the rest of the gas pumps causing an explosion.
- The people:The people who have this problem are the man who spilled the gas the people who work at and were at the gas station because they put into harms way. The other people who have the problem are the people who were forced to come in and carefully clean up the spill.
- "South Florida students back in school after coronavirus scare" by Cindy Krischer Goodman of the Sun Sentinel
- https://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/palm-beach/fl-ne-benjamin-school-students-coronavirus-20200130-si3otzmi4feoncjalnxike6pgm-story.html
- In this article it talks about a group of students and teachers who were exposed possible coronavirus symptoms. This occurred at a school conference at Yale. After they were isolated and tested for the virus. They were then allowed to return after to their normal lives after their tests returned back. The original exchange student has been isolated and is still being test and as of right now. The CDC has yet to release any more information on it.
- The problem: This virus is wide spreading and has yet to be cured so any further spread is a danger to the whole population. Another problem with something like this is that since it is so new we do not know the total effect or damage that it could possibly do if left unchecked.
- The people: The people who have this problem are anyone who was exposed to the symptoms at the conference and anyone else that it could be possibly spread to. This virus is unpredictable and unknown and could affect anyone.
- "Student who says he needed more time on test sues Miami Dade College under disability law" by Theo Karantsalis of the Miami Herald
- https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/education/article239700283.html
- In this article a student at Miami Dade College applied for and was granted accommodation for extra time on quizzes and tests. When he requested extra time for a quiz from his teacher he was berated in front of the whole class and was embarrassed. He has since then filed a lawsuit against the suit for emotional harm and pain. The teacher denied his request because he did not "look" like his other students with disabilities. The suit is currently ongoing and the school will not comment on it.
- The problem: the problem is that the student did everything right. He followed all the right rules and took the necessary steps to acquire the permission for extra time. But, for this man this so called educator to take the rules into his own hands and not just deny his request but publicly berate him is not only wrong but immoral.
- The person: The person affected by this is obviously the student who was denied a service he deserves and was forced to take action and go after the school. The other people who are affected are the school themselves because now they have bad publicity and a potential lawsuit because of one man's actions.
- "Unique Guitar shaped hotel opens at Seminole Casino" by Curt Anderson of the Florida daily Post
- https://floridadailypost.com/unique-guitar-shaped-hotel-opens-seminole-casino/
- This article talks about the recent addition to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. The tribe recently added a hotel portion to their casino in Hollywood but it's not just any hotel. This hotel is in the shape of a guitar and is an instant tourist attraction. The upgrade cost about 1.5 billion but added a small set of shops a night club and an are dedicated to performances by all kinds of acts including magic music and other entertainment. According to the Seminole tribe counsel this was their way of thrusting the tribe into the world wide spotlight.
- The problem: The problem with this brand new hotel is that it is right in the middle of suburban south Florida. It also has created a new hub for all sorts of illicit activities to take place. And with more traffic going through this area it puts stress on not only the people who live there but the police as well.
- The people: The people affected by this are the people who live in this area and have to deal with the increased traffic and attention on the are in which they live. Also the police in the area now have to be on more alert due to the large increase of people in the area.
- "Disney characters say tourists inappropriately touched them" The Gainesville Sun
- https://www.gainesville.com/news/20191227/disney-characters-say-tourists-inappropriately-touched-them
- This article talks about three individuals who work as cast members at Disney. These three individuals filed police reports that they were touched inappropriately by tourists at the park. One woman who portrayed Minnie Mouse claims she was patted on the head causing the costume to slide down and strain her neck. The other two claimed they were groped by tourists while working as characters. This is not the first time Disney workers have filed reports on occasions such as these.
- The problem:The problem is that these people are working providing a service for us and now they can not even feel safe in their own work environment. How would you feel if you had to constantly look over your shoulder while you were working. It is up to Disney and the police to provide more protection for these people.
- The people: the ones who are affected are the workers at Disney who go into work worried about people coming up to them and trying to touch them. The problem is that their job is to interact with people.

Identifying Local Opportunities

Forming An Opportunity Belief
I believe there is an unmeet need in regards to Publix subs and online ordering and the constant stealing of other people's subs. Anyone who has ever ordered a Publix sub online and went to the store to pick it up and found that it wasn't there has a need for this. The need itself is fairly new since Publix has just recently implemented online ordering. The problem lies with what happens after the online order is made. It is put in a case and left there to be picked up by anyone not just the customer. Right now nothing is being done about this problem and it just continues to rise. There are other food vendors who have come up with solutions to this problem for example Little Caesar's has a big machine that they put your pizza in and in order to access it you have to put a code in to the machine and it gives you the pizza. I think that there is about a 67% chance this opportunity exists.

#1. Early twenties male
- Have you ever ordered a Publix sub?
- Yes, on many occasions.
- Have you ever ordered a Publix sub online?
- Yes, about twenty to thirty percent of the time.
- Have you ever had a sub stolen?
- Not sure I have experienced missing subs but not sure if they were stolen.
- What would you do to prevent this from happening to you?
- I would not pay for the online therefore if it is stolen I don't really lose anything.
- When did you first become aware of this problem?
- When I realized how they left out the online orders for anyone to take.
- Would you feel more comfortable if Publix used a code system for their orders?
- Yes, because I think that it would provide more security for my order and keeps me from having to bother a worker.
Reflection
I learned that I'm not the only person who has run into this problem and that others have also though of possible solutions to it. The most surprising thing I learned from this person is that they came up with the idea to pay for the sub at the store rather than online to possibly deter thieves.
#2. Female Early twenties
- Have you ever ordered a Publix sub?
- Yes, about once or twice a month.
- Have you ever ordered a Publix sub online?
- Yes, about fifty percent of the time.
- Have you ever had a sub stolen?
- No
- What would you do to prevent this from happening to you?
- I would order it in person rather than online.
- When did you first become aware of this problem?
- I saw someone complain about their sub being stolen at Publix.
- Would you feel more comfortable if Publix used a code system for their orders?
- Yes, because it insures that my sub was there and was the correct order and could also keep it warm or refrigerated.
Reflection
I learned that some people would rather just avoid the issue rather than try to find a solution to it. I also learned that I could take my opportunity further and use the machine for the code system as either a warmer or a refrigerator to keep the subs in good condition.
#3 Female Mid Twenties
- Have you ever ordered a Publix sub?
- Yes, about twice a month
- Have you ever ordered a Publix sub online?
- Yes, about seventy percent of the time.
- Have you ever had a sub stolen?
- No
- What would you do to prevent this from happening to you?
- I would ask them to hold it in the back and not put it out and wait till I come and ask for it.
- When did you first become aware of this problem?
- About a month ago when I heard someone complaining about it.
- Would you feel more comfortable if Publix used a code system for their orders?
- Yes, because then my sub would be protected from being stolen.
Reflection
I learned that some people have never encountered this problem but have still heard of or even thought about it. Another surprising thing that I learned was that some people almost never order subs in person and usually only order online which makes me think the opportunity is real.
Summary
I think the opportunity is still there. After doing the interviews I have actually realized that many people have also thought about this opportunity. I also learned some new things I could attach to a possible proposal. I think customer feedback is huge and can really help you get to the root of your problems as a business. There is a trade off though you cannot always just blindly follow the customer and you must use clear decision making to find the balance.
My Entrepreneurship Story
When I was growing up I lived next door to my two cousins PJ and Stephen. We would hang out everyday after school. One day we were inside watching cartoons and we witnessed the characters making lemonade at a lemonade stand. So we came up with the idea that at five o'clock we would set up our own stand in front of our houses and when people were coming home from work in hopes that we would sell some lemonade. So at 4:30 I ran home and grabbed the cups from my pantry Stephen ran and grabbed the carton of lemonade from the fridge and PJ went and grabbed our foldable table from his room. We patiently waited for customers to come by we were selling one cup fro a dollar. We soon ran into a couple issues like the fact we didn't have change for people who wanted to buy some or what would we do when we ran out of lemonade or even what we would do with the money we made. This was my first experience with entrepreneurship and if nothing else it was a learning experience for the future. The sun set on that day and we all went home looking forward to the next day and what it would bring.
As for why i enrolled in this class it is a pretty simple answer. For the sake of honestly it was because this class was required for my major but that doesn't diminish my enthusiasm for what this class may bring.

Bugs
1. On Archer Road at 5:30 when there are too many people on the road and the person behind you decides to drive as close to you as possible.
I think this exist because many people are trying to get home around this time and everyone just wants to get where they are going.
2. When I take my cousins dog out for a walk when they are out of town and I step in dog poop.
I believe this exists because people are too lazy to clean up after their animals and are therefore leaving other people in a bad position.
3. When I am playing Call of Duty and there are people sitting in corners waiting for you to walk by rather that running around the map and playing the game correctly.
I think this exists because people are too worried about their stats and rankings rather that enjoying the game the way it was meant to be played.
4. When I am at lunch with my cousin and he refuses to chew with his mouth closed.
I think this exists because nobody ever corrected him as a kid and now he thinks it is okay to eat like that.
5. When the line at the Chick Fil A on Archer is so long that it raps around the building on a Saturday afternoon.
I think this exists because people are aware that Chick Fil A won't be open on Sunday so they know it is there last chance to get it until Monday.
6.When people leave things on the floor and u stub your toe on them.
I think this exists because people don't clean up after themselves but it also has to do with the person walking around in the dark because they should have turned a light on.
7.When you are driving down the road and are stopped at a red light and people honk at you immediately as the light turns green.
I think this happens because people are impatient and want to get where they are going in a hurry.
8.When people leave dirty dishes just sitting in the sink to pile up.
I think this exists because once again people are too lazy to just take care of things when they happens and continue to put things off.
9.When people sneeze and do not cover their mouths before it happens.
I think this could happen for two reasons. The first is they don't have time to react the second is they just don't care enough to do it which in my opinion is poor etiquette and manners.
10. When people go out to eat with each other but are constantly lost in their phones and technology.
I think this happens because of the world we live in, we are constantly surrounded by technology and we are too lost in these things.
11. When people recognize a famous person in public a proceed to hound them rather than just letting them go about their day.
I think this happens because we as "normal" people have forgot that famous people just want to live normal lives like the rest of us.
12. When people in parking lots double park or park way too close to the line and instead of fixing it they just leave it that way.
I think this happens because people don't have any care for other people's discomfort or misfortune so therefore they don't care if they cause you inconvenience.
13. When my cousin finishes the milk in our apartment but puts the empty container back in the fridge.
This happens because he leaves it as a reminder for himself rather that just putting it on a list.
14.When you are at the movies and there is someone consistently talking or on their phone so you cannot pay attention.
I think this happens because people have no care for the rules and are only worried about themselves and not the people surrounding them.
15. When my sister finishes the toilet paper in our shared bathroom but refuses to put a new roll in.
This happens because she is too lazy to walk to the middle of the house to get a new roll and put it on the holder.
16.When you are out with your friends and one person dominates the conversation with talk only about themselves.
I think tis happens because people are only concerned with their own lives and don't care enough about the people around them to ask.
17.When people type in abreviations that I don't know are do not understand.
I think this happens because people have become caught up in technology that proper grammar has lost its touch.
18.When people drive without their lights on their car at night.
I think this exists because people are not paying attention and do not realize things happening around them.
19. When people pick up food and put it back on the plate.
I think this happens because people are inconsiderate about other people and don't care if they touch their food.
20. When people pop their gum out loud in class.
I think this happens people don't have any respect for the teacher and there fore don't care if they interupt their class.
Coming up with this list was easy towards the beginning but became harder as it went on because i began to run out of things to talk about. I found that as the assignment went on it was harder becasue i was running out of things to talk about.
