Final Reflection

1) Read through your posts from this semester. Recall all of the experiences you've had a long the way -- the highs, the lows -- the fun moments, and the moments of drudgery, and even the moments of dread.
2) What sticks out to you as the most formative experience? The experience that you'll remember years later? What was your most joyous experience? What experience are you most proud of yourself for accomplishing?
  • To me the most formative experience would have to be the elevator pitches. I chose this because for me recording myself or public speaking is very hard for me. I do not enjoy hearing myself speak and so it was a little uncomfortable. However after a few takes and some patience I was able to not only complete them but do them in a manner that I could be proud of. This exercise really helped me to get out of my shell and open up about my idea. This is why I found it to be my most formative experience of the course.
3) At the beginning of the semester, I mentioned that I wanted each of you to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Now, at the end, do you see yourself as an entrepreneur? Do you think you have moved closer to developing an entrepreneurial mindset?
  • I don't know if i would call myself a full blown entrepreneur just yet. However, I would definitely say that this class has opened my mind and showed me what it means to be an entrepreneur. This class showed me how to take a raw untapped idea and mold it through different exercises into an opportunity that can be put to use in the real world. I am truly grateful for everything this class has taught me and I will continue to use the lessons I learned from it in my life going forward.
4) What is the one recommendation you would make to the students who are going to journey down this path in the future? What would you recommend they do to perform best in this course? What would you recommend they do to foster that mindset?
  • One thing I would tell someone who is taking this class would have to do with managing your time. The assignments for this class are due on Fridays but for the most part are not hard and are mostly based on your own ideas and opinions. If you try to get ahead in this class it helps with not only passing the class but also passing your other classes. For those lookin to take this class going forward I would recommend them to be open to the ideas and techniques this class has to offer because they can truly help down the road.

Venture Concept No. 2

Opportunity:

  • Online ordering and the process of picking up and taking out food is growing by the second. People are constantly ordering online in an effort to avoid talking to workers or siting down in restaurants. My product allows for customers to walk in get their order with no further contact with workers and walk out.  This product also works to combat theft of take out orders. I know that I have had many experiences with my arriving at a restaurant or store and my order being missing or messed up. People walk into restaurants all the time and act as someone they are not and take orders that were already paid fro online or over the phone.
  • The need for this product is directed towards college students but can be used by universally everyone. This product works to assure the safety and security of your order. It works like a vault and only opens to a custom created code that is made by the person who ordered the food. This way people can order and pay for food online and not worry about it being gone when they arrive. The product can also act as both a heater or refrigerator to help keep food at the desired temperature.
  • The forces at work that have brought about this opportunity are a growing rise in internet ordering and rising issue of theft of orders. In today's world especially in college towns people don't seem to care about others peoples thoughts or concerns. There are many places such as Publix or Chipotle where they just put your order on a shelf once its ready for anyone to take.
  • Geographically speaking this product would most likely be centralized in the US but more specifically in cities or college towns in restaurants and stores that specialize in takeout and online ordering. Demographically speaking we would initially target college students and towns in an effort to test out the product then we would spread out to suburbs and cities for everyone to use our product.
  • Customers are currently satisfying this need by ordering delivery which costs more money or by siting down in restaurants and wasting time. They are also just ordering online and running the risk of their items being taken. I don't believe they are very loyal to this type of business or there would not be this opportunity. I do believe that this opportunity is big and can be implemented in a number of ways to a number of different types of people. If done correctly this could be a huge opportunity to be successful.
  • I do not think this window will be open very long especially in times like this it is only a matter of time before someone else thinks of this idea and acts on it.
Innovation:
  • My product allows for customers to walk in get their order with no further contact with workers and walk out.  This product also works to combat theft of take out orders. It works on a app system such as Uber or Door Dash. You open the app and and search the restaurant you want to order from to see if food safes is offered there. After you find your restaurant you proceed with your order and payment after you have paid you will be asked to create a custom four digit code. After this the restaurant will receive your order and make it and place it into the food safe with your code so it can only be accessed by you and your code.
  • We would sell these machines to restaurants for a flat rate and also charge a small percentage for using our app and network. After the testing period our machines will be in stores an restaurants all over the place. Bringing in revenue in multiple different ways. We will also seek deals with chains and stores in order to save them money and further spread our own product.
Venture Concept:
  • This product works to assure the safety and security of your order. It works like a vault and only opens to a custom created code that is made by the person who ordered the food. This way people can order and pay for food online and not worry about it being gone when they arrive. The product can also act as both a heater or refrigerator to help keep food at the desired temperature. Customers will buy this to make their businesses more efficient as well as raise customer satisfaction. These things will raise revenues in their stores which also raises our revenue as well.
  • I believe customers would switch to this product because it will make their business better and more efficient as well as make customers lives easier. I don't think it will be very hard to get them to switch because most likely they won't be switching from anything and we would be pitching them something to improve their business.
  • There aren't really any competitors, the only company with a similar product is Little Caesars and they have not expanded to other companies. Customer satisfaction and experience plays the largest roll in our minds. We designed this product specifically to help and ease the lives of our customers.
  • As far as packaging and distribution is concerned we would most likely ship our machines via truck across our distribution area. Are business would be mostly internet based but we would also have a factory/ warehouse which would be our distribution hub where would operate both our app and ship out our machines from. This would include our warehouse employees drivers and all or tech support as well as managers to oversee everything. These are all things we would have to deal with in the inner workings of our organization.
Feedback Summary

  • A lot of the feedback I received had to do with the application of the product and how it would be used. Most of the feedback was positive and encouraging. However some of it posed some very interesting questions. For example, some feedback asked how I would sell the products as well as how it would be payed for and applied in stores. Some people recommended I charge a flat rate while others suggested I charge a rate  per use of the machine.
  • I chose to keep my original idea of charging a flat rate with a small percentage per order after reading the  feedback my peers had. I didn't change too much about my original venture concept because i didn't receive a whole lot of feedback. I did decide to change the idea I had about the product to run on a code system. I decided that instead of making your own code each order would be given a QR code to scan and when you arrive at the store you scan it at the machine. I did this to further push the contactless pickup idea of the product.

Reading Reflection No. 3

1) You read about an entrepreneur: Andrew Carnegie
  • What surprised you the most?
The thing that surprised me the most was to learn that Carnegie was a popular user of insider trading. Though it was legal at the time it was still seen as immoral. He was also quoted to saying that the key to being rich was being the right person at the right place at the right time. This made him sound lucky rather than smart for his immense wealth. I guess he was a little bit of both.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
I admired that he went back home after his success in the US. He went back home with his mother to show that he had finally become something. Another thing I admired was his immense charitable donations and foundations. After he sold his company he was immensely generous in making public libraries and his donations to the arts.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
The thing I least admired about him was how he dealt with the union uprising and strikes. While I know that unions were a new thing that no one had seen before his dealing with it was violent and out of control. He also went on to deny hiring Pinkerton soldiers to solve the issue which was clearly just to maintain his image.
  • Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
Carnegie did encounter failure when he bought some British railroad patents for a large sum of money that ended up being worthless. However after that he began looking for another venture to try his hand at. That is when he began studying the steel industry. Without that initial failure he may have never began work in the steel industry and may not have become as rich as he did.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?

One competency that I noticed was that he had a plan to be rich and ti be someone and he stuck to that goal. He changed his ideas a few times but never stopped moving forward towards his goal. He had a great entrepreneurial mind and was committed to putting it to use in any way he could.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

One part of the reading that confused me was why he sold his company. He was the majority owner and operator of the largest steel plant in the country yet he just sold it. It confused me because he had spent so much time and effort building it literally from the ground up and then just turned around and sold it. That is why it would be one of the questions I would ask him because I never fully understood his decision.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
The first question I would ask him would be why did he sell his steel company to Morgan? I would ask this because I would want to know the true meaning behind it whether it was to get rich or he was just ready to retire. The second question I would ask would be if he regretted his handling of the union s and strikes at his factories? I would ask this because it is still something we talk about today and it obviously could have been handled in a completely different way.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?

I think Carnegie valued hard work but it was not the most important thing. He told young men that success doesn’t come from endless work. Instead, it came from being the right man at the right time and place. I don't know if I share his opinion or not because I don't think its all about being lucky sometimes working hard just pays off itself.

Your Exit Strategy

1) Identify the exit strategy you plan to make. Do you intend to sell your business in the next 5 years for a large return? Do you intend to stay with the business for several decades and retire? Do you intend to protect the venture as a family business, and pass it down to your children?
For, my business venture I intend to make it large enough to attract a large company such as coke or pespi and sell off the rights. I never though of this as a long term plan. I would most likely build it up to a standard that I feel is both physically and financially successful. I would look to sell the company but still keep some stock in it and move on to other possible business ventures.
2) Why have you selected this particular exit strategy?
I chose this because I created this opportunity as a way to make money and possibly provide the world with something I felt they were truly lacking. Like I said before I never though of this idea as a long term solution for the rest of my life but rather as a stepping stone for myself to go on to bigger an better things.
3) How do you think your exit strategy has influenced the other decisions you've made in your concept? For instance, has it influenced how you have identified an opportunity? Has it influenced your growth intentions or how you plan to acquire and use resources?
I don't think my exit strategy has really changed my decisions for the future of my product. I made this product up specifically with this exit strategy in mind therefore I was already considering my exit strategy towards the beginning. It could affect how I acquire resources because I could look for possible partners earlier on and then sell it off to them fully. It however didn't affect how I came up with this opportunity because like I said I had previously had this exit strategy in mind.

Celebrating Failure

1) Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class, or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.
This semester i would say that I have probably failed at more things than I have succeeded at. However, one thing in particular comes tom my mind when I think about failure. This semester I took Managerial Accounting and from the beginning it was a rocky ride. I studied and prepared all I could but when the first test came around it was a bomb. I failed only getting a 35 probably the lowest score I have ever received on a test. I decided to change my approach to the class and even sought the help of a tutor. After tremendous preparation and studying I received a 75 of the second test better but still not good. Unfortunately, even though I showed improvement it still wasn't enough to improve my grade so I decided to drop the class.
2) Tell us what you learned from it.
What I learned from this experience is that even though you can try your best you're still gonna fail and that's ok. The key is to adapt and to change your approach. If something isn't working try something new. My dad once told me the definition if insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. I took those words to heart and I really try to change things up every now and then.
3) Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure. Failure is hard, isn't it? It's embarrassing, sure, but it also means that we have to change something about ourselves. Talk about how you handle failure (emotionally, behaviorally). Finally, talk about how this class has changed your perspective on failure -- are you more likely to take a risk now than you were just a few months ago?
Failure is hard but it's how we deal with failure that I think really defines us. Emotionally, I try not to think about it and move on. It's harder than it sounds but I have gotten really good at looking forward rather than looking back. Behaviorally I try to surround myself with my best friends, the people I know don't care if I fail or not because they are my best friends. This class has really changed my view of failure. It made me realize that everyone even the rich, famous and powerful fail and fail a lot. So, it showed me that its ok if you fail as long as you try again. I don't know if I am more likely to take a risk right now but I am definitely more likely to think about an calculate taking one.

What’s Next?

What I think is Next?

  • I think that the next step for my product is to get together a team of software and mechanical engineers in order to start working on both the machines and the app sides of our products.  In doing this we can get a prototype ready to show customers as well as getting different businesses to use and sign up for our app. The next step for food safes is the first real step in seeing if this opportunity can really work.
Existing market interviews:
  • Interview #1: Cousin and third year student at the University of Florida
    • When asked what he thinks is next for my product he suggested that we come up with an alternative for a possible delivery option because some people don't like to drive to the stores to pick up their food.
  • Interview #2: Sister who currently lives in Washington D.C.
    • When asked what she thinks is next for my product she said that she thinks we should try and possibly partner with DoorDash or Uber in an effort to get them to endorse our product with other restaurants and stores. She said that this way it helps them with efficiency and customer satisfaction as well.
  • Interview # 3: Cousin and Senior at Florida State University
    • When asked what he thinks is next for my product he said that I should interview and poll potential business clients to see if they are willing or able to purchase and us one of our products. He says this will give us an idea on whether or not this product will work.
Reflection:
After receiving feedback from my interviews and thinking about my product some more there a couple things I have decided to do next. These interviews have also made me think that I need to be open to more feedback and advice from others. There a bunch of ways I could move forward with this venture.
I think the next step is to talk to restaurants and get their opinions on my product. This seems like the right course to take because it will let us know whether to continue on with this opportunity or continue tweeking the idea. After we talk to the businesses we plan on pitching to we will have a better idea on what we need to fix as well as what they are looking for.

New Market
  • I think a new market to look at would be parents and older people who live in the suburbs or neighborhood areas. I think this is a good market to test because our initial demographic is cities and college students. So this is a perfect way to look at a new point of view.
New Market Interviews
  • Interview # 1: Dad who is a business owner and manager
    • When asked what he thinks is next for my product he thinks I need a broader spectrum and need to offer deald or codes to entice people to join on the app.
  • Interview # 2: Mom who is a manger at an insurance company
    • When asked what she thinks is next for my product she said that I should look to market to people in situations where it is hard to get food delivered that way they know that their food is in the best quality when they go to pick it up.

Your Venture’s Unfair Advantage

  1. Idea restructuring/ lack of real competition: The only place I have seen a product similar to this is in Little Caesars. Other than that this product has not been expanded on in any other stores or restaurants.
    • Valuable: This is very Valuable because the entire idea is based upon expanding this product to different areas of business \.
    • Rare: This is rare because as I said before no one else has expanded on this idea.
    • Inimitable: This is imitable because the product fro the most part already exists and can be expanded on by others.
    • Non-substitutable: I don't believe that it is substitutable because it is my idea that I am restructuring.
  2. Social Capital: Polling and feedback from desired customers: My target audience is mainly college students due to their profound online ordering of food and other products.
    • Valuable: This is very valuable because this allows me to be in direct contact with my target audience as well as receive feedback from them.
    • Rare: I would say this is kind of rare because not anyone can just go out and directly connect with their customers.
    • Inimitable: This is imitable because people could also ask college students about their products.
    • Non-substitutable: It is substitutable because big companies could do polls or surveys to get around this and to get feedback. But I think it lacks the direct approach.
  3. Marketing and business experience: I have worked as both a marketer and worker for multiple businesses. Specifically food businesses.
    • Valuable: This is valuable because it will help me market to restaurants and stores as well as use my business background to help connect with them.
    • Rare: This isn't very rare as many people have the ability to market.
    • Inimitable: This is sort of imitable because other people can do this but they wouldn't necessarily do it like I would.
    • Non-substitutable: I could hire a marketer to do these things for me.
  4. Labor experience in restaurants: I have worked in several restaurants and I know how they operate which will also help me connect with them.
    • Valuable: I believe this is valuable because it helps me create a connection with the people and businesses I am trying to sell my product to.
    • Rare: This isn't very rare as their are many people who have worked in restaurants other than me.
    • Inimitable: It is imitable because people can use their work experience as well.
    • Non-substitutable: Its not substitutable because I am using my own personal experiences.
  5. Relationships with financial majors and accountants: I am friends with multiple finance majors who can help me with getting all my finances in order as well as my aunt is a corporate lawyer and registered accountant.
    • Valuable: This is valuable because it gives me people to seek help from for the internals workings of my business.
    • Rare: I could reach out to others but I already have existing relationships with others.
    • Inimitable: It is imitable because you could hire others but I wouldn't have the relationships or chemistry with them.
    • Non-substitutable: It is substitutable because you can conduct job searches for people in those fields.
  6. Relationships with store and restaurant managers: I know multiple store and restaurant managers that I could approach with my idea to put in their stores.
    • Valuable: This is valuable because I have an in with multiple businesses which gives me leverage to use to push my product to them.
    • Rare: It is rare because they are my relationships as well as my product idea.
    • Inimitable: It is imitable because other people could have relationships with managers but it is not the same relationships I have.
    • Non-substitutable: It's not substitutable because you can't replace relationships made over years.
  7.  Changing times and trends: Nowadays people are more focused on online ordering and pick up and delivery. This product allows easy pickup and helps you avoid lines and stress.
    • Valuable: This is valuable because it helps launch this product to the public as well as gives me a selling point to businesses.
    • Rare: This rare because it is a sign of changing times where people are going towards minimal contact pickup and delivery.
    • Inimitable: It is not imitable because you can't copy a trend.
    • Non-substitutable: It could be substituted further down the road by another trend.
  8.  Relationships with fellow entrepreneurs: I am friends with and have relationships with fellow entrepreneurs
    • Valuable: This is valuable because it helps me with the ins and outs of being an entrepreneur. As well as it gives me someone to bounce ideas off of.
    • Rare: It is rare because they are my relationships as well as my product idea.
    • Inimitable: It is imitable because other people could have relationships with managers but it is not the same relationships I have.
    • Non-substitutable: It's not substitutable because you can't replace relationships made over years.
  9. Support of organizations: There are many businesses out there trying to solve the problems of incorrect order pickups or inefficiency in the take out business.
    • Valuable: This is valuable because I can offer them solutions to their problem.
    • Rare: It's not rare because their are a lot of businesses with the same problem.
    • Inimitable: This cannot be copied by other products or ventures unless they are also pushing the same product, and that is rare.
    • Non-substitutable: It is substitutable because other people could have the same idea.
  10.  Sales and entrepreneurial experience: I worked in sale for multiple companies as well as selling my own products in my neighborhood.
    • Valuable: This is valuable because it will help me sell this product to companies.
    • Rare: It's not rare because plenty of people have experience in sales.
    • Inimitable: It could be copied but not exactly because no one has the same exact experiences as me.
    • Non-substitutable: It could be substituted by professional salesman.
After doing all of this I have decided that the number one resource I have is my connection to accountants and finance experts. This the most important because it allows me to lockdown the internal finances of my business as well get ready to deal with potential clients and customers.

Elevator Pitch No. 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n9JqiGb3CY

I didn't receive much feedback for my post that required me to change much but the stuff that did was this. I changed the start of my pitch to include a little bit of a hook as well as changed up some other parts to make it more clear and content.

Reading Reflection No. 2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
  • The general theme of this book was the author of the Dilbert comics series ,Scott Adams, telling us about how he went from failure to failure until he eventually hit it big. Another major theme from the book talks about people's impatience with themselves. Adams talks about how people often think they should be much farther off in life but sometimes aren't even in the right profession. He then goes on to give examples of famous and well known people who didn't start their true passion until much later on in their lives.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
  • It connected with our class because it talks about many of the same things Professor Pryor talks about. For example, he talks about planning and setting up goals fro yourself and also talks about how anyone can be successful. Just like how in class we talk about setting goals as entrepreneurs and how anyone themselves can be one.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
  • The exercise I would design would involve something Adams talks about in the book. He talks about finding what you're comfortable taking risks at. If you are good at talking in front of people run with that. Or if you are good at giving one on one advice look into that. It all about finding out what it is that you are good at.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
  • I expected this to comedic and humorous coming from a famous cartoon artist. Instead however it was educational and somewhat profound. Adams' was smart and encouraging in his book and was able to deliver his message while talking about his own experiences which I found to be most impressive.

Idea Napkin No. 2

I didn't receive any constructive feedback from my first Idea napkin. The only comments I received were encouraging and talking about how good my post was.

1) You. Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?
  • I am Joey Magnole I am a sophomore at the University of Florida. I am currently majoring in business. I have a talent in basketball, I play almost every day and have been playing since I was five. I would also say that I have a talent for being a very approachable person. I know that seems a little boastful but I truly believe I have a knack for being open and being a very accepting person. I think that if I could successfully pull this off it would play a huge part in my life. It would lead to a possible steady source of income and could be a potential building block for my entrepreneurial future.
2) What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).
  • My proposed product is a large machine that has multiple drawers and a touch screen. The system I am proposing works like this. When you order your sub you will now be asked to produce a custom four digit pin and when you go to the store the large case which will work both as a warmer or cooler to keep the subs a certain temperature. When you get there you will put in the four digit code you created and one of the drawers within the machine will open with your sub in it and you then take your sub and leave. This could not only work for Publix but for anything that uses online ordering.
3) Who are you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?
  • I am offering this product to stores and restaurants who specialize in carryout and specifically online ordering. The idea originally came to offer this to Publix for their online sub orders. However the idea quickly evolved to being applicable to all types of food vendors. The key characteristic for the demographic are people who have a lot of online ordering. This product provides these stores with an extra level of security and customer satisfaction.
4) Why do they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will actually pay you money to use your product or service.
  • I believe they care because my product offers them a level of security for their product while also requiring little to no man power to keep on and working. The best part about the product is that the customer doesn't have to pay anything extra for it. This product is meant to prevent theft and wasted resources which eventually saves money for the stores.
5) What are your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else? Also: what do you have that nobody else has?
  • As best to my knowledge there are competitors in this but they have failed to expand their business to different areas of restaurant. I think that my idea to expand it to stores as well as different restaurants. I also think that the code system sets us apart by using customized codes it ensures that customer specificity to the order.

I do believe all these elements work together. However, I believe that the issues with this opportunity lie with presenting it to stores and restaurants. The problem is showing these businesses that it is worth having these machines rather than not having it. The key points to present have to do with theft and wasted resources because of it. Also to point out that this requires little to no extra work and raises customer satisfaction.

Feedback Memo
For the "feedback memo" -- please summarize at least two main points that you took away from the feedback you received. Also, please describe how you incorporated the feedback into this idea napkin.
  • One piece of feedback I chose to focus on was that in times like this where takeout is king and companies are constantly trying to raise their efficiency. My product is the perfect way to do this, with the automated screen and code system the product doesn't require employee oversight making it easier for the customer.
  • The other piece of feedback I focused on was that this product would cut costs for these companies. This product is a win win for both company and customer. If I can focus on product cost and efficiency there is no reason companies wont wan't to purchase my product.

Elevator Pitch No. 2

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n9JqiGb3CY

2. A reflection on the feedback you received from your last pitch

  • The feedback I received on my last pitch was critical; and constructive. While some of the comments were blunt they were not without purpose. I learned from the feedback that my video needed to be longer and more informative. As well I learned that I needed to deliver the speech with more emotion and enthusiasm. The feed back was a clear response to the wholes within my pitch.

3. What did you change, based on the feedback?

  • In this pitch I made sure to add more information about the product as well on the plans for distribution. I also added things to create scenarios and paint a better picture for the viewer as well as trying to entice investors. By making the pitch longer it also allowed me to expound upon the way the product functions and operates.

Create a Customer Avatar

When I think of my customer avatar I think of a college student. A student who has been hard at work all day cramming for an upcoming test and hasn't eaten all day. It's late at night and our student who for the sake of time we will call Danny has finally decided to call it quits for the day and get something to eat. Just before leaving the library Danny puts in an order to Publix for a pipping hot chicken tender sub. Danny is very wary about ordering a sub online because last time he did it was stolen before he got there. The problem is that Danny knows that if he doesn't order his sub online he won't make it to Publix before the deli closes. So he orders it but something is different the order asks him for a four digit code, something he has never done before but he thinks nothing of it because he is too worried about what happened last time. He rushes over in his vintage 1967 red Ford Mustang that he rebuilt with his brother over the summer. As he is driving through campus praying that he makes it and his sub is there waiting for him Danny can't help but think the worst that he will once again be left with out his sub. He finally makes it to Publix where he runs through the parking lot and through doors to turn quickly to the right towards the deli hoping and praying he sees his sub from a far. That is when he sees it, a giant stainless steel box bigger than a vending machine with a touch screen placed directly in the middle. He approaches slowly and confused as he arrives at the screen it asks him for a four digit pin so Danny enters his pin remembering that it asked for one after he placed his order. Bam out pops a drawer and in it sits his sub made to perfection. All his stress leaves his body and is replaced by joy he looks closer at the machine to try and make out what it says. All the that machine reads is "Food Safes, keeping your food safe for you".

What do you have in common with the customer avatar?

  • I often find myself forgetting to eat due to school just like Danny. And like Danny I too often order food online and worry about the safety of the food and whether or not it's going to be there when I arrive.

If you have anything in common with the avatar, do you think that is a coincidence? Why?

  • I don't think this is a coincidence because i designed this product with my own needs in mind as well as trying to solve a problem that I though people like myself often face in their everyday lives.

    Reading Reflection No. 1

    1) You read about an entrepreneur: The Wright Brothers
    • What surprised you the most?
      • The thing that surprised me the most was that the idea for an aviation vehicle did not sell very well in the US at the beginning so they had to start off in Europe and build their credibility.
    • What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
      • The thing I admired most about the Wright brothers was that no matter how many feats they achieved or how much money they made they never stopped improving. Even after having huge celebrations and meeting two kings and the president they continued to strive forward with their dream.
    • What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
      • The thing I admired the least about the brothers was that they never advanced their idea passed just selling and building air crafts. They could have commercialized flight if they had just though more about the business and less about the science.
    • Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
      • They did encounter adversity and failure. Oriville crashed in a demonstration for the US army and killed his passenger in the process while also seriously injuring himself. However while his brother recovered Wilbur continued to work and made many new advancements to the planes in preparation for Oriville's return.
    2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
    • The competency that stuck out to me the most was that they never wavered or gave up. Even when people refused the rumors, even when they crashed and burned and even when their mother died. These two brothers never strayed from their plan or their ideals and to me that is the most impressive thing about them.

    3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
    • One part that confused me was when they got into a patent war. Even though their design was patented and spoken for there was still debate over who the design and idea actually belonged to.

    4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
    • The first question I would ask would be where the idea for the plane originally came about and what was the driving force behind it? I would ask this because I would like to know what problem they were trying to solve when they identified this opportunity.
    • The second question I would ask would be which one of them is the better pilot? I would ask this because I thin it would be funny to watch two brother go back and forth with each other.

    5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
    • I think hard work was everything to them because they never stopped working no matter how much success they had they never stopped improving. I do share their opinion because if you work as hard as you can no matter the outcome it still means you gave it your all.

    Halfway Reflection

    1) Tenaciousness is a competency. What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?
    • To keep up with this course I have used a multitude of different behaviors and traits. First is discipline, in order to be successful in this class you have to be disciplined and be willing to sit down and put time into the work. Another is creativity, in this class we are asked to come up with ideas and solutions in a creative and original fashion. Finally the last behavior I have used is is openness. In order to succeed in this class and in life you need to be open to criticism and outside opinions, because if not then you are wasting insight that will only benefit you.

    2) Tenaciousness is also about attitude. Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this?
    • There have been many times where I felt like giving up especially in school. One specific time was when I was struggling in calculus and this was already my second time taking the class. However, as the class went on I told myself that I could persevere and I just worked harder and put more time into it and ended up passing the class. I do feel like this class has helped me develop a tenacious attitude. I think that i had one before but this class has helped bring it to light. I think the elevator pitch helped this the most because it forced me to verbally state my ideals and plans rather than just writing about it.

    3) Three tips. What are three tips you would offer next semester's student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing the 'tenacious mindset' ?
    • Time Management: The first thing I would tell someone who is taking this class would have to do with managing your time. The assignments for this class are due on Fridays but for the most part are not hard and are mostly based on your own ideas and opinions. If you try to get ahead in this class it helps with not only passing the class but also passing your other classes.
    • Never Feel Comfortable: Just because you got into this school doesn't mean that get to stay. In this school and in this class if you get comfortable you leave yourself open to getting lazy and failing yourself and your classes.
    • Open Yourself up: this advice goes not only for this class but for all your classes if you open yourself up to others and their ideas it helps you gain perspective. The perspective of others helps open your mind and also helps you understand lessons better.

    Idea Napkin No. 1

Solving The Problem

    • Product: My product has to do with Publix subs, specifically the online ordering and pick up method used by Publix.
    • Some of you have probably ordered a sub from Publix online and then proceeded to go to the store pick it up and leave. What some of you probably don't know is that it is very easy for a random person to walk in to a Publix read the ingredients on the sub and take it without anyone batting an eye. This happens because once the sub is made it is put into a case and just left there. I want to create a product that works almost as a safe for the subs.
    • I think restaurants and stores would like this product because it guarantees their customers food will arrive to the correct person and they will not have to waste materials and time remaking orders because someone else has run off with theirs. I truly believe this product has a very realistic application in today's world where people are constantly ordering things online.

Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

    • Economic Trend: Smart watches over taking traditional watches
      • Source: https://www.ibtimes.com/apple-watch-has-overtaken-swiss-watch-industry-2916980
      • I believe there is an opportunity here because while more traditional dial watches have become rather old and obsolete due to the advanced technologies of phones and computers smart watches provide all the style of a regular watch with much more capability and appeal.
      • I think the prototypical customer are people who are drawn to technology and advancements. Smart watches make it easier to do things such as read texts or emails as well as measure body outputs and set reminders and alarms. I think it may be difficult to exploit this opportunity only because there are already established and accepted smart watches on the market so creating a new one may prove difficult.
      • I think I saw an opportunity here because I realized how few people nowadays wear traditional watches. Also I have realized the sudden growth in interest in smart watches and their endless capabilities.
    • Economic Trend: AI and Machine Learning
      • Source:https://www.forbes.com/sites/danielnewman/2017/08/08/top-5-digital-transformation-trends-in-manufacturing/#39692070249f
      • I believe there is an opportunity here because through the constant improvement of artificial intelligence we can apply it to automated factories and increase production by multitudes. AI is a gateway to automated and efficient production in the world.
      • I think the prototypical customer for this would be large corporations or businesses looking to advance their factories and make them better. I don't think it would be hard to apply this opportunity because the technology already exists its just a matter of putting everything together.
      • I think I saw this as an opportunity because of my accounting class. In my class we are constantly talking about how to make businesses and factories more efficient and run smoother and I belie AI is the answer.
    • Regulatory Change: To regulate marijuana
      • Source:https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/116/hr420
      • I believe there is an opportunity here because the regulation and legalization of marijuana could allow for increased economic growth and government revenue if regulated correctly. I also believe if regulated correctly it could provide help to those in need of mental or physical healing.
      • I think the prototypical customer are those who are in need of pain therapy for both physical and mental pain. As marijuana provides a less addictive and less deficit option to opioids. I think it may be hard to apply this because of the political yellow  tape surrounding the whole subject of marijuana.
      • I think I saw this opportunity because I often discuss the possible effects marijuana would have on society if legalized and regulated. I believe if done correctly marijuana could truly help those in need of it.
    • Regulatory Change: Should the federal government regulate vaccines
      • Source:https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/116/hr2527
      • I believe there is an opportunity because Vaccines are important and are used to prevent a multitude of deadly diseases from resurfacing. For example the recent decline of vaccinations led to resurgence of the measles virus that hadn't been seen in almost twenty years.
      • I think the prototypical customers would be anyone in support of mandatory vaccines which in my opinion is a great idea and should be required. I think it could be difficult to apply this due to the rules and regulations on if the federal government can declare something as required over individual state governments.
      • I think I saw this opportunity because of the recent news of people refusing to vaccinate their children. I also think it had to do with me remembering going in to get my vaccines as a child and young adult.

    Identifying Local Opportunities

    • "Florida man pumps 30 gallons into wrong whole at Orlando gas station prompting hazmat response." By Joe Mario Pedersen of the Orlando Sentinel
      • https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-ne-florida-man-pumps-gas-into-wrong-hole-orlando-20200129-e2lruydwjvfyzpsjyatwlb2hne-story.html
      • What happened in this article was a man went to fill his boat with gasoline and accidentally put the hose into a fishing rod holder. Before he could realize what was happening the gasoline had spilled on the boat and on the floor of the gas station. After that hazmat needed to be called and they came and cleared the spilled gasoline from the premises.
      • The problem:The problem was the spilled gasoline could cause sickness or accidents within the gas station. The bigger problem was that with all the gasoline around any spark could have caused a massive fire and spread to the rest of the gas pumps causing an explosion.
      • The people:The people who have this problem are the man who spilled the gas the people who work at and were at the gas station because they put into harms way. The other people who have the problem are the people who were forced to come in and carefully clean up the spill.
    • "South Florida students back in school after coronavirus scare" by Cindy Krischer Goodman of the Sun Sentinel
      • https://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/palm-beach/fl-ne-benjamin-school-students-coronavirus-20200130-si3otzmi4feoncjalnxike6pgm-story.html
      • In this article it talks about a group of students and teachers who were exposed possible coronavirus symptoms. This occurred at a school conference at Yale. After they were isolated and tested for the virus. They were then allowed to return after to their normal lives after their tests returned back. The original exchange student has been isolated and is still being test and as of right now. The CDC has yet to release any more information on it.
      • The problem: This virus is wide spreading and has yet to be cured so any further spread is a danger to the whole population. Another problem with something like this is that since it is so new we do not know the total effect or damage that it could possibly do if left unchecked.
      • The people: The people who have this problem are anyone who was exposed to the symptoms at the conference and anyone else that it could be possibly spread to. This virus is unpredictable and unknown and could affect anyone.
    • "Student who says he needed more time on test sues Miami Dade College under disability law" by Theo Karantsalis of the Miami Herald
      • https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/education/article239700283.html
      • In this article a student at Miami Dade College applied for and was granted accommodation for extra time on quizzes and tests. When he requested extra time for a quiz from his teacher he was berated in front of the whole class and was embarrassed. He has since then filed a lawsuit against the suit for emotional harm and pain. The teacher denied his request because he did not "look" like his other students with disabilities. The suit is currently ongoing and the school will not comment on it.
      • The problem: the problem is that the student did everything right. He followed all the right rules and took the necessary steps to acquire the permission for extra time. But, for this man this so called educator to take the rules into his own hands and not just deny his request but publicly berate him is not only wrong but immoral.
      • The person: The person affected by this is obviously the student who was denied a service he deserves and was forced to take action and go after the school. The other people who are affected are the school themselves because now they have bad publicity and a potential lawsuit because of one man's actions.
    • "Unique Guitar shaped hotel opens at Seminole Casino" by Curt Anderson of the Florida daily Post
      • https://floridadailypost.com/unique-guitar-shaped-hotel-opens-seminole-casino/
      • This article talks about the recent addition to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. The tribe recently added a hotel portion to their casino in Hollywood but it's not just any hotel. This hotel is in the shape of a guitar and is an instant tourist attraction. The upgrade cost about 1.5 billion but added a small set of shops a night club and an are dedicated to performances by all kinds of acts including magic music and other entertainment. According to the Seminole tribe counsel this was their way of thrusting the tribe into the world wide spotlight.
      • The problem: The problem with this brand new hotel is that it is right in the middle of suburban south Florida. It also has created a new hub for all sorts of illicit activities to take place. And with more traffic going through this area it puts stress on not only the people who live there but the police as well.
      • The people: The people affected by this are the people who live in this area and have to deal with the increased traffic and attention on the are in which they live. Also the police in the area now have to be on more alert due to the large increase of people in the area.

      • This article talks about three individuals who work as cast members at Disney. These three individuals filed police reports that they were touched inappropriately by tourists at the park. One woman who portrayed Minnie Mouse  claims she was patted on the head causing the costume to slide down and strain her neck. The other two claimed they were groped by tourists while working as characters. This is not the first time Disney workers have filed reports on occasions such as these.
      • The problem:The problem is that these people are working providing a service for us and now they can not even feel safe in their own work environment. How would you feel if you had to constantly look over your shoulder while you were working. It is up to Disney and the police to provide more protection for these people.
      • The people: the ones who are affected are the workers at Disney who go into work worried about people coming up to them and trying to touch them. The problem is that their job is to interact with people.

    Forming An Opportunity Belief

I believe there is an unmeet need in regards to Publix subs and online ordering and the constant stealing of other people's subs. Anyone who has ever ordered a Publix sub online and went to the store to pick it up and found that it wasn't there has a need for this. The need itself is fairly new since Publix has just recently implemented online ordering. The problem lies with what happens after the online order is made. It is put in a case and left there to be picked up by anyone not just the customer. Right now nothing is being done about this problem and it just continues to rise. There are other food vendors who have come up with solutions to this problem for example Little Caesar's has a big machine that they put your pizza in and in order to access it you have to put a code in to the machine and it gives you the pizza. I think that there is about a 67% chance this opportunity exists.

    #1. Early twenties male

    • Have you ever ordered a Publix sub?
      • Yes, on many occasions.
    • Have you ever ordered a Publix sub online?
      • Yes, about twenty to thirty percent of the time.
    • Have you ever had a sub stolen?
      • Not sure I have experienced missing subs but not sure if they were stolen.
    • What would you do to prevent this from happening to you?
      • I would not pay for the online therefore if it is stolen I don't really lose anything.
    • When did you first become aware of this problem?
      • When I realized how they left out the online orders for anyone to take.
    • Would you feel more comfortable if Publix used a code system for their orders?
      • Yes, because I think that it would provide more security for my order and keeps me from having to bother a worker.
    Reflection
I learned that I'm not the only person who has run into this problem and that others have also though of possible solutions to it. The most surprising thing I learned from this person is that they came up with the idea to pay for the sub at the store rather than online to possibly deter thieves.

    #2. Female Early twenties

    • Have you ever ordered a Publix sub?
      • Yes, about once or twice a month.
    • Have you ever ordered a Publix sub online?
      • Yes, about fifty percent of the time.
    • Have you ever had a sub stolen?
      • No
    • What would you do to prevent this from happening to you?
      • I would order it in person rather than online.
    • When did you first become aware of this problem?
      • I saw someone complain about their sub being stolen at Publix.
    • Would you feel more comfortable if Publix used a code system for their orders?
      • Yes, because it insures that my sub was there and was the correct order and could also keep it warm or refrigerated.
    Reflection
I learned that some people would rather just avoid the issue rather than try to find a solution to it. I also learned that I could take my opportunity further and use the machine for the code system as either a warmer or a refrigerator to keep the subs in good condition.

    #3 Female Mid Twenties
    • Have you ever ordered a Publix sub?
      • Yes, about twice a month
    • Have you ever ordered a Publix sub online?
      • Yes, about seventy percent of the time.
    • Have you ever had a sub stolen?
      • No
    • What would you do to prevent this from happening to you?
      • I would ask them to hold it in the back and not put it out and wait till I come and ask for it.
    • When did you first become aware of this problem?
      • About a month ago when I heard someone complaining about it.
    • Would you feel more comfortable if Publix used a code system for their orders?
      • Yes, because then my sub would be protected from being stolen.
    Reflection
I learned that some people have never encountered this problem but have still heard of or even thought about it. Another surprising thing that I learned was that some people almost never order subs in person and usually only order online which makes me think the opportunity is real.

    Summary
I think the opportunity is still there. After doing the interviews I have actually realized that many people have also thought about this opportunity. I also learned some new things I could attach to a possible proposal. I think customer feedback is huge and can really help you get to the root of your problems as a business. There is a trade off though you cannot always just blindly follow the customer and you must use clear decision making to find the balance.

    My Entrepreneurship Story

When I was growing up I lived next door to my two cousins PJ and Stephen. We would hang out everyday after school. One day we were inside watching cartoons and we witnessed the characters making lemonade at a lemonade stand. So we came up with the idea that at five o'clock we would set up our own stand in front of our houses and when people were coming home from work in hopes that we would sell some lemonade. So at 4:30 I ran home and grabbed the cups from my pantry Stephen ran and grabbed the carton of lemonade from the fridge and PJ went and grabbed our foldable table from his room. We patiently waited for customers to come by we were selling one cup fro a dollar. We soon ran into a couple issues like the fact we didn't have change for people who wanted to buy some or what would we do when we ran out of lemonade or even what we would do with the money we made. This was my first experience with entrepreneurship and if nothing else it was a learning experience for the future. The sun set on that day and we all went home looking forward to the next day and what it would bring.

As for why i enrolled in this class it is a pretty simple answer. For the sake of honestly it was because this class was required for my major but that doesn't diminish my enthusiasm for what this class may bring.

    1. On Archer Road at 5:30 when there are too many people on the road and the person behind you decides to drive as close to you as possible.
I think this exist because many people are trying to get home around this time and everyone just wants to get where they are going.

    2. When I take my cousins dog out for a walk when they are out of town and I step in dog poop.
I believe this exists because people are too lazy to clean up after their animals and are therefore leaving other people in a bad position.

    3. When I am playing Call of Duty and there are people sitting in corners waiting for you to walk by rather that running around the map and playing the game correctly.
I think this exists because people are too worried about their stats and rankings rather that enjoying the game the way it was meant to be played.

    4. When I am at lunch with my cousin and he refuses to chew with his mouth closed.
I think this exists because nobody ever corrected him as a kid and now he thinks it is okay to eat like that.

    5. When the line at the Chick Fil A on Archer is so long that it raps around the building on a Saturday afternoon.
I think this exists because people are aware that Chick Fil A won't be open on Sunday so they know it is there last chance to get it until Monday.

6.When people leave things on the floor and u stub your toe on them.
I think this exists because people don't clean up after themselves but it also has to do with the person walking around in the dark because they should have turned a light on.

7.When you are driving down the road and are stopped at a red light and people honk at you immediately as the light turns green.
I think this happens because people are impatient and want to get where they are going in a hurry.

8.When people leave dirty dishes just sitting in the sink to pile up.
I think this exists because once again people are too lazy to just take care of things when they happens and continue to put things off.

9.When people sneeze and do not cover their mouths before it happens.
I think this could happen for two reasons. The first is they don't have time to react the second is they just don't care enough to do it which in my opinion is poor etiquette and manners.

    10. When people go out to eat with each other but are constantly lost in their phones and technology.
I think this happens because of the world we live in, we are constantly surrounded by technology and we are too lost in these things.

    11. When people recognize a famous person in public a proceed to hound them rather than just letting them go about their day.
I think this happens because we as "normal" people have forgot that famous people just want to live normal lives like the rest of us.

    12. When people in parking lots double park or park way too close to the line and instead of fixing it they just leave it that way.
I think this happens because people don't have any care for other people's discomfort or misfortune so therefore they don't care if they cause you inconvenience.

    13. When my cousin finishes the milk in our apartment but puts the empty container back in the fridge.
This happens because he leaves it as a reminder for himself rather that just putting it on a list.

14.When you are at the movies and there is someone consistently talking or on their phone so you cannot pay attention.
I think this happens because people have no care for the rules and are only worried about themselves and not the people surrounding them.

    15. When my sister finishes the toilet paper in our shared bathroom but refuses to put a new roll in.
This happens because she is too lazy to walk to the middle of the house to get a new roll and put it on the holder.

16.When you are out with your friends and one person dominates the conversation with talk only about themselves.
I think tis happens because people are only concerned with their own lives and don't care enough about the people around them to ask.

17.When people type in abreviations that I don't know are do not understand.
I think this happens because people have become caught up in technology that proper grammar has lost its touch.

18.When people drive without their lights on their car at night.
I think this exists because people are not paying attention and do not realize things happening around them.

    19. When people pick up food and put it back on the plate.
I think this happens because people are inconsiderate about other people and don't care if they touch their food.

    20. When people pop their gum out loud in class.
I think this happens people don't have any respect for the teacher and there fore don't care if they interupt their class.

Coming up with this list was easy towards the beginning but became harder as it went on because i began to run out of things to talk about. I found that as the assignment went on it was harder becasue i was running out of things to talk about.
